So, it takes something like this to bring me back to my blog.  

I love my coffee.  I’m not a coffee-snob: a good cuppa joe with half and half is all it takes to make me happy.  I need my four cups every morning, and from time to time, extra later in the day. 

But this totally freaked me out. 

Cafe au Bat? Woman Treated for Rabies After Finding Bat in Coffee Filter

It’s a short story; I’ll just post it here:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa  —  It wasn’t just the caffeine that gave an Iowa woman an extra jolt after she had her morning coffee. It was also the bat she found in the filter.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says the woman reported a bat in her house but wasn’t too worried about it. She turned on her automatic coffee maker before bedtime and drank her coffee the next morning.

She discovered the bat in the filter when she went to clean it that night. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies.

Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

Help me out here, folks.  How the heck did a bat get in the coffee filter?  How did the woman not notice the “essense of bat” in her coffee?  How did she go to bed at night not concerned that there was a bat in her house in the first place?!?  Don’t get me wrong; I like bats.  I’m not into bat collectibles or anything like that, but how can you not like a creature that can eat thousands of bugs in a day?  Sweet creatures, in spite of their bad reputation.  But, I wouldn’t climb into bed at night unconcerned about one in my house.

OH…and that last part…the bat’s brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether or not it had rabies.  Oh please. 

So, here I sit, morning coffee within reach and pondering the imponderable…bats in my coffee.

Ummmm…Hi. 

So, I have this blog that I neglect, you see.  And friends of mine still come by after all this time and post comments, which is really sweet.    I think part of my problem (aside from the fact that I’m a goof…but that’s another story), is that my blog is having a bit of an identity crisis. 

It started as a homeschool blog as part of a homeschool website, which is ::sniff:: no longer with us.  So I moved it here.  After a great deal of thought I decided to make it public because I really don’t put anything too personal in here.  Surprisingly, my biggest hits are on specific hairtoys and a recipe I listed.  I was even linked by a discussion board in Sweden (or was it Finland? ETA: it was Sweden.  I got another visitor.  Hi Sweden! ) for my directions for how to secure a bun with hairsticks. 

Anyway…I don’t put daily stories of my life here.  (We’re not that exciting.)  I don’t want to put pics of my kids online.  (Too many weirdos out there.)  I did decide to start a new hair blog over at The Long Hair Community because it makes more sense to keep the hair stuff together and in context.  (Even though my biggest hits are on hairtoys in this blog.  Go figure.)  Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until I had sent a link to that blog to a friend of mine to read, that you need to be a member of LHC with at least 25 posts in order to see the blogs over there.  ::sigh::

I meet with homeschool friends daily in a gmail group; chatter politics with the folks at The Mighty Righty; hair talk with the long hairs at The Long Hair Community; get spiritual with my siblings in Christ at Spiritually Speaking…

I guess what I’m saying is I don’t know what to write about here most of the time.  Hence, the identity crisis. 

That’s all.  I’m a goof with a blog that doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up.  (Neither does its owner.) 

You wouldn’t know it by how infrequently I post; but I know I have a blog because I drop in from time to time and think, “Man, am I a slacker!”

Ugh.

The really bad part is that if I don’t log in to write, I don’t catch up on everybody else’s blogs, either, because you’re all on my invisible blogroll.    I gotta get better at this. 

Tomorrow, DD12 goes for her 12 year check up.  I will be asked if she’s getting the new Gardasil vaccine.  NOPE.  I don’t expect any hassle from our pediatrician.    I’m not anti-vaccine in general; I think this one is unnecessary and sends the wrong message to our daughters. 

Next week, we will have the plumbing in our 2 story house replaced, including the pipes under the basement floor.  ::groan::  I wanted an older house.   The plan is for Monday and Tuesday, and if things go wrong, Wednesday.  (Please pray they go right.)  We’ll be away-from-homeschooling those days. 

Close to midnite.  I swear I have an inner morning person just dying to get out and face the day; my outer night owl just won’t let her get to sleep at a decent hour. 

Every time I browse my pics to post an emoticon I see the pics of my chocolate cake.  That’s just not right.  I’m drooling now.

OK, I finally wrote something on my About page.  You can all sleep peacefully tonight knowing that.   WordPress wouldn’t allow me to change the date/time stamp on that page, so it still reads February 9th.   Linky up in right hand corner.

Welcome to the New (but not improved) Tresses’ Other Corner.    There are still books to be unpacked, and I may still repaint the walls (again!), but for now I think I’m able to open the place and offer you a mug of hot coffee and some dark chocolate. 

Are you new to my corner?  Imagine that, so am I!  You may notice that all of the posts dated before today were originally posted at the DY Homeschool Forum, which is, sadly, coming to a close very soon.   My many many thanks to Donna Young for providing such a safe and friendly environment for homeschool moms.  The moms there are wonderful too. So we’re scrambling to find new homes, and many have found them here.  I’ll do what I can to keep up and not bore you or me to tears.   There is a link to one of our new group homes in my Blogroll.  Group homes!  Makes us sound like a bunch of renegade moms.

Oh wait.  We homeschool.  We are a bunch of renegade moms!

Off to tinker around a bit more.  Perhaps by Christmas I’ll have WordPress figured out.
